Engraving a Cross Necklace: Names, Dates & Verses
A name, a meaningful date, or a short Bible verse reference can give a cross necklace a personal connection without needing a long message. The useful question is not how much you can say, but which few words will bring the right person or moment to mind.
This guide focuses on wording for ROCO’s Cross Bar Necklace. It allows up to 20 characters per side, arranged as one centered line. Front engraving and optional back engraving are included in its $30 price, so you can choose one inscription or use both sides without an extra engraving charge.
Start with one meaning for each side
Before choosing a font or typing a message, decide what the necklace should represent: a person, a faith connection, a milestone, or a remembrance. Then choose a short inscription that carries that meaning on its own. You do not need to explain the entire story on the pendant.
- A name: Use a first name, surname, or initials that the wearer recognizes.
- A date: Choose a wedding date, a baptism date, or another personally meaningful day.
- A verse reference: Point to a passage with its book, chapter, and verse rather than trying to fit the full text.
- A short message: Keep a remembrance or encouragement simple, such as “Always With Me.”
Engraving ideas that fit the character limit
Every example below is within the Cross Bar Necklace’s 20-character limit for one side. Counts include spaces and punctuation. The verse examples are references only—not the full wording of those passages.
| Purpose | Exact inscription | Characters |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Isabella | 8 |
| Initials | A + J | 5 |
| Date | 10.26.2026 | 10 |
| Name and year | Grace 2026 | 10 |
| Verse reference | Philippians 4:13 | 16 |
| Verse reference | Proverbs 3:5-6 | 14 |
| Remembrance | Always With Me | 14 |
| Encouragement | Walk By Faith | 13 |
If your wording is too long, shorten it intentionally: use initials instead of two full names, choose a shorter date format, or move a separate thought to the other side. A shorter version should still mean what you want it to mean. Do not remove a meaningful word simply to fill the available space differently.
Let the front and back do different jobs
Two sides can hold related details without turning them into a single crowded inscription. For example, “Isabella” could go on the front and “10.26.2026” on the back. Another option is “Walk By Faith” on the front and “Proverbs 3:5-6” on the back. Each side has its own 20-character allowance; the layout remains a centered single line.
The front and back previews represent one necklace, not two. The back preview uses the front photograph as a placement reference, with the cross shown on the opposite side; it is not a photograph of the actual reverse.
Check the layout, then proofread the wording
The Cross Bar pendant measures 35 × 6 mm and is 2 mm thick, with a 45 cm chain plus a 5 cm extender. Choose the cross on the left or right as viewed from the front. Engraving is centered in the clear metal area, so review the relationship between the cross and your inscription.
The designer illustrates wording placement, not guaranteed finished contrast. Lighting and finish can affect how the engraving looks. Gold and Silver are finish colors on stainless steel, not solid precious metals.
- Check every letter, initial, date, and verse reference.
- Count spaces and punctuation as well as letters.
- Review both sides separately and confirm the cross position.
- Submit the exact wording you want engraved; do not rely on automatic corrections.
The necklace includes a ROCO pouch and free US shipping. If you are still deciding on pendant shape or chain style, see Choosing an Engravable Cross Pendant: A Practical Guide before settling on your inscription.
